There is a new wiki, footprints-of-emergence, which includes links to articles, and to tools, for going about the practical business of describing complexity.

The wiki includes links to resources on emergence, examples of 'footprints' in a 'folder of footprints' and a template that you can try out, to see if it helps you to 'describe complexity' in learning. Remember that the design footprint - what was meant to happen, is only the first footprint in a series of footprints, as the learner - or learning event - or 'class/cohort' makes its way across the learning space / environment. There is an example of a series of 5 footprints that have been created to describe (some of) the key dynamics of the CCK08 course.
